Italian Neoclassical Column Etchings - Corinto
Neoclassicism held powerful sway in Europe and the US in the 18th and 19th centuries, when the "classical" ideas of antiquity provided deep cultural inspiration. This set of Italian etchings from the period pays homage in particular to the capital, the element that most readily identifies the different styles of Greek and Roman architecture. The classical orders of architecture – Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian from Greece, Tuscan and Composite from Rome – are each represented by one elegantly drawn capital. A sixth print shows all five orders, side by side.
