1800 Letter to the French Minister of War
On November 3, 1800, this document was sent by Jean Lannes, Inspector General of the Consular Guard, to the French Minister of War, Lazare Carnot, to inform him that three cavalry majors had been detailed to Santo Domingo (a neighbor to the French colony of Saint-Domingue, where slaves were in revolt) and were awaiting his orders. Despite the efforts of France to quell the uprising, the slaves ultimately won their freedom and founded the Haitian Republic. We've replicated this vestige of history exactly, reproducing the original document's hand-inked message and official stamps, and even the sepia tones of the creased and water-stained paper.
