There may be controversy over who created this puzzle – former Canastota, NY, Postmaster Noyes Chapman or puzzle king Sam Loyd from Philadelphia – but its popularity is indisputable since it first appeared in 1874 (or was it 1879...). First manufactured in Boston as the "Gem Puzzle," Fifteen became an international craze in 1880. The challenge: Reorder the 15 tiles in consecutive order, using just the empty 16th slot to achieve your mission. Our version, a reproduction of the 1933 edition, is destined to become someone's next can't-put-it-down obsession.
