Don't dally.
Register fairly soon after your engagement, before you're besieged with umpteen other matters to be decided. The less harried you are, the more thoughtful you'll be in selecting things you want to build your life around.

In addition to such necessities as bedding and towels, don't overlook less obvious registry items, such as curtain rods or bathroom sconces. And feel free to add a few big-ticket items to your list, such as that sumptuous leather sofa you've been eyeing. Your enterprising guests might want to pool their resources and fulfill your wishes.
Involve the groom.
Guys and hardware stores are life-long buddies. Once he sees what's available, his wishlist might even be longer than yours. No porcelain gravy boats here, gents.
Keep your options open and get a gift certificate.
Friends enjoy the idea because. by gosh, they just want you to be happy, and they know that several gift certificates add up to something swell.
